Your comments on my page

[edit]

Hiya, thanks for your comments on my talk page. I had marked the Unitarian Democratic Coalition article for cleanup because there was quite a large blank space on the page which didn't look very good. I think someone fixed the problem quite soon after I tagged it.

Portugal *is* a lovely country and I would love to come back. A dear friend of mine is from Lisbon and I'd like to visit her family there once again some day. Take care. aliceinlampyland 14:54, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Featured article (History of Portugal)

[edit]

Portuguese communists

[edit]

Hi Alfonso Thanks for your input. The -politician-stubs are often used for both holders of a political office and for important people associated with a given ideology. For stub sorting purposes, I would e.g. characterize Karl Marx as a politician (although he never held any political office) as well as a philosopher and an economist. If these people were non-notable members of the Communist Party, I'd be very glad if you'd correct my mistakes and also remove them from the Category:Portuguese communists, otherwise I think other stub sorters might make the same error (the problem is that there are simply too many stub articles left to sort, so it is impossible to read more than a small number of them.) If somebody is equally associated with both politics and another trade, it would be very relevant to assign him to both a -politician-stub and e.g. artist-stub. Sorry about the mix-up. Regards. --Valentinian 00:50, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies as well; I must have misinterpreted your comment. I didn't realize that you were a non-native English speaker and thought that you were saying something else. Again, I apologize. I'll respond to you on the FAC nomination page when I go through all the FACs again. Thanks again! Flcelloguy (A note?) 01:07, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nice to see articles, created by you about such a great (at least in the past) event! By the way, I have a commemorative 1 ruble coin, released in the Soviet Union in 1985, with the emblem of the 12th festival, held in Moscow. Possibly, I'll scan it in the future and upload into the Wiki. Cmapm 23:45, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the lack of time and sources is my problem too. Besides, having very few time, I'm now mostly concentrated on sports topics, mainly about gymnastics and Soviet gymnasts. But I hope to have some more time in the nearest future. In my turn, if you'll need some stuff, feel free to ask me. Besides the coin, I have also some information about WFYS, including few pictures, from Soviet sources, unfortunately there is copyright problems, but I think one or two pictures can be uploaded to Wiki under the "fair use" copyright tag. And I have lyrics of the anthem of DY, but only in Russian, and I can also provide a link to the mp3 file if you want.
If you have Portuguese songs or pictures related to WFYS, I would like to hear/see them!
I stay aside from politics and I don't feel any sympathy to any parties in the place, where I live. But I feel a very very strong nostalgia to the Soviet times, and if anyone asks if I want to go back 30-40 years to the USSR, I would answer "Yes, without any doubt!!!!". Best wishes! Cmapm 01:14, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to send you the anthem and another song: "We say this" (music by G.Movsesyan, lyrics by L.Oshanin), written for the 11th WFYS in 1978. I like it very much, it's refrain is translated into English is:
Sky above me, sky above me, as sombrero, as sombrero
Golden shore, golden shore - Varadero, Varadero
Cuba is far, Cuba is far, Cuba is near, Cuba is near
This is said, this is said - by us.
I'm singing it now :) If you didn't receive my letter I'll try to send these songs one's again separately. Cmapm 00:29, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies

[edit]

I'm sorry for offending you on the FAC nomination page. You were right: I am impatient. My comments were too harsh. I've started to make edits to the PCP page again. I have nothing against Communists nor against the PCP; I just want to make the article fair and comprehensible. Best wishes, and again, my sincere apologies. Mérito Nacional

[edit]
I, João Gameiro Pais, hereby award you with The Barnstar of National Merit for your amazing work in articles related to Portugal regarding politics, culture, history and geography.

Obrigado! Thanks for the award. I'm affraid I'll need to answer "in the same coin" (nevermind the Portuguese expression). So, here it goes! Congratulations! Gameiro

Vamos a isto!

Tinha-me esquecido completamente. Abraço. Gameiro 15:33, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Portal

[edit]

Gameiro 15:56, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ocasion -> occasion

[edit]

Municipalities

[edit]

Wow! Great work so far! I hope you won't stop in the middle :) So here are some comments:

  1. Make sure image copyright status is ok. I spotted a couple of coat of arms that did not have a license at all.
  2. You cannot use rulling party icon because it's under fair use which prohibits using the images for decoration. I suggest using a color scheme and adding some linked accronym in the cells so that a reader could actually go to the party's article.
  3. I don't think raks are neccessary here. You have 308 municipalities. I had 60 and it was not that easy to add rankings. Now for you to add ranks will be a real hell, and just imagine, you make a mistake and you'll have to re-rank everything... Nah, I say leave it out.
  4. If you remove ranks and narrow the name column, you should have space for maps. Now, they are not that readily available, but User:Rei-artur has uploaded various maps of Portugal subdivisions. They are in svg, so it's easy to modify them and all the borders are already there, so it should not be that difficult. So my suggestions for maps:
    • In the lead have a one big map showing both districts and municipalities. I imagine something like I did with Image:Municipalities in Lithuania.png where each district is identified by a different color and municipalities are visible within its borders. Now you will not be able to name them because there are too many of them. You might be able to name districts though.
    • Individual district maps. They would magnify on that particular district and show all municipalities there, most likely you should be able to name them. No other districts would be shown.
    • (this map idea is stolen from List of Mexico City metro stations)
  5. Make sure you disambiguate the links.
  6. Also, decide if you want to make a distinction between the municipality and its capital/chief city. I know that those two can be very confusing and usually the article content overlaps significantly.
  7. Could you mention in the lead how many parishes are there in total. I think it would help to imagine the situation somewhat better.
  8. You might want to consider using {{TOCright}} which moves TOC to the right and so you'll be able to avoid that huuuge ugly white gap between the lead and the lists.

Everything I sdaid here is just my comments and suggestions. I hope you'll find it helpful and you don't have to listen to me :) Once in a while I am too perfectionist :) You are doing an absolutely marvelous job by yourself! Renata 16:39, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gameiro 02:14, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what your friend told about me above :) But here is me again. Image:Portuguese municipalities districts.PNG - could you put district names on it? It's very hard to identify them by colors since a couple colors are way to similar. I needed to find a scolor scheme for 10 counties and I spend like 2-3 hours... So naming would be much easier. And I just hope you are sain enough not to write 4261 articles about parishes... :) Renata 18:49, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry Renata! I'm used to talk to him in Portuguese. I just said that I had to repeat what you had just said: that his work was amazing. And now, in Portuguese again:
Gameiro 19:33, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Municipalities template

[edit]

I didn't know that the other template existed when I created mine. You can switch them all to one or the other if you prefer. I do, however, think that it looks better to not show the table borders in the template. Other than that, I don't care too much about which one gets used. Kaldari 18:32, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How about putting your decision here first?

[edit]

The Braga page sucks with all those parishes listed. You just went ahead and changed it without any discussion. Maluka 07:20, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Braga

[edit]

You made a lot of suggestions and I still stand firm in my convictions that the list ruins the page, but that's not the real deal here.

http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braga is the page that people living in another country should see, not the one that's up. Tourism is being pushed and it's vital to this desperate economy and if the English page was like the Portuguese page, it would make Braga more appealing and would perhaps draw tourists North, instead of thinking Portugal is nothing but Lisboa and Algarve. That's the impression most people have who have never been here and the places pushed by travel agents in other countries, especially the UK and the US.

Do you think non-Portuguese people are interested or impressed by the names of the parishes? They want to know what there is to see and to do. They don't care about parishes, freguesias or municipalities. Stating the number is enough for the English wiki. Is it too much work to add the places that are on the pt. one or to translate it to English. They don't even appear to be related. Maluka 17:42, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In regards to your comments on my user page, if I were fluent in Portuguese it wouldn't be a problem. I've lived here 10 years, long enough to know Braga and my husband is Portuguese. You may not think someone from another country could understand the politics of not only Braga, but Portugal, but believe me, I do.

I never said this was a place for tourists, yet people refer to Wikipedia for quick reference, be it for travel plans or curiosity about the place. My mother told me she read the English Braga page and was dismayed there was so little there. If she could read Portuguese, I'd refer her to the pt. page and then she would be impressed.

Why are there two? Why can't they be the same? I get the feeling you have no idea where I'm coming from and are blind to any ideas that don't jibe with your own. Maluka 08:45, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ohboy, now you've taken the offensive. I can't believe you said you don't care about Braga. Also you call Freguesias parishes, when in fact parish is religious. Learn the difference between the two. I don't understand why you have a problem with this page in English and why you insist on listing the FREGUESIAS. NOBODY CARES!!!!! No, I am not Portuguese, but I live the Portuguese life, not like some Brit expat who's taking over Algarve. I care that Braga is given the best on the English page and you don't give a flying F**k. Maluka 03:25, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've done your homework for you.

Distrito, Concelho and Freguesia are the present administrative divisions of Portugal. The smaller is the freguesia, that are grouped in Concelhos that are grouped in Distritos.

Paroquia (parish in English) is the smallest religious (catholic) division, and they are grouped in Vigararias (wich are "invisible" in genealogical terms) that are grouped in Dioceses (or Bispados, Arquidioceses -Braga and Evora- or Patriarcados - this last only in Lisboa).

Do you understand now that Parish does NOT mean Freguesia????? Maluka 03:32, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of municipalities

[edit]

Obrigado. Gameiro 22:57, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Gameiro 23:16, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I thought I was through with you but nope, I have another beef. Why do you discuss things about an ENGLISH site in Portuguese? I have a basic understanding of what's said, but this isn't the Portuguese site. Please, keep it in English. Maluka 08:07, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • You're welcome! (and working late too!) I don't think you need to worry so much about NPOV in the intro as much as how to introduce 'alien terminology' to the layperson unfamiliar with same WHILE MAINTAINING interesting readability. That is, worry about the NPOV in the article text, and if someone thinks it creeps into the intro, others will lend a hand smoothing the English, assuming their own (probable) bias is worthy of attention. The effort will take some three times as much prose in the intro as now exists (so I guesstimate), as a lot of 'parenthetical phrases' like this one, will certainly be necessary (or perhaps this kind instead). Same term, iirc! But I haven't had an English course in 30 years, so what do I know! ~:)

List of Presidents of Portugal

[edit]

I'm not interested in the legal stuff. Lets ignore whether this is to do with images or not. The point is that some objections were raised prior to FAL. The objections were resolved by removing the offending content from the article. After going to FAL, the content was restored. I think there needs to be at a least a brief note in the talk page saying that you now consider the images to be OK and that the issues have been addressed. I'm sorry the other guy failed to be helpful when you asked his advise. Colin°Talk 12:16, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pedido de desculpas

[edit]

Entretanto, alguma coisa diz. Um abraço! Gameiro 19:11, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A question on your vote on Carnildo's RFA

[edit]

Is this what you were referring to? It seems he did respond: [1]. Perhaps it would have been better if he took more time to talk to you... but there are over 400,000 images on En Wikipedia. Almost all the tag maintenance is done by a handful of users (about 20 in total, but most are inactive at any given time). I'm not sure what Carnildo's workload is like, but I know that I tag several thousand images per week (due to new uploads!)... and I'm only tagging things which are mostly to be deleted, I think Carnildo does even more work than I. I know from talking to him that he is very open to discussion, but many of the suggestions people come up with are unworkable based on the scale of our work (could you imagine writing thousands of personal messages a week in addition to the regular work?) and many of the people who contact us are overtly hostile.. It's understandable that people become upset when their favorite images are removed, but can you imagine that every time you do a batch of good work you are guaranteed a flock of angry uninformed people will come yelling? It really is dreadful work at times, but is it so important because without it our project will fail one of it's two primary goals (free content). ... I don't think that a change in vote from you will change the outcome at this point, the memory of the Wiki is too long and too callous. But I do know that I really need Carnildo's help and I feel sure the project does too, especially as an admin, because he is one of very few who I can trust to work consistently even when people mistreat him. I hope you can find room to reconsider your position, but if not I understand... Everyone is entitled to their own priorities. :) --Gmaxwell 05:51, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That "thanks" was a bit sarcastic when the article became featured. I know he has lots of work and he may be very busy, but he objected a FL candidate due to image tags, then I addressed him and he said nothing. How much uploaders he finds in this context? I asked him politely, unlike what he did in the objection, because I really wanted the article to be featured. At least he removed his objection after I removed the pictures, but he said nothing about the pictures. I know he is not god and he may commit errors, and he made errors bigger than this one, but if he does a good work he should be forgiven, after all, he didn't killed anyone, it's just wikipedia, I'll strike out my comment. And, by the way, if you have time, could you take a look on the status of the pictures of the List of Presidents of Portugal? I changed the tags and I reintroduced the pictures, because the article looks stupid without them. If you are too busy just forget. Regards.

Oh wow, I see why he was objecting. I don't know how much their is to say: That list is effectively a fair use image gallery, which is the sort of thing which is specifically prohibited, see WP:FUC. Hm. I think it's attractive with and without the pictures, although obviously better with them. But there are images there which we can't legally use. --Gmaxwell 21:02, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PCP peer review

[edit]

I'm glad you found my suggestions helpful. Best of luck with the article; I think it's pretty close to qualifying for featured-article status. Hydriotaphia 13:48, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

re:Size of cells in tables

[edit]

I believe that it should be enough to simply specify a width, either in % or pixels for a given cell to have it fixed to that width. If all cells are specified to have the same width, then they should not resize. Have you tried that? -Splashtalk 04:01, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lista

[edit]

A lista é principalmente tua.

RfA Results and Thanks

[edit]
Mário/archive2, thank you for supporting me in my recent RfA. Although it did not succeed as no consensus was declared (final: 65/29/7), I know that there is always an opportunity to request adminship again. If and when that day comes, I hope you will once again support me. If at any time I make any mistakes or if you would like to comment on my contributions to Wikipedia, you are more than welcome to do so. Regardless of your religious, cultural, and personal beliefs, I pray that whatever and whoever motivates you in life continues to guide you on the most righteous path.

Smith chart

[edit]

Would it be possible for someone to generate a Smith chart image from scratch and then upload it? It would avoid the entire situation if that was the case. --Fastfission 21:53, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Porto

[edit]

Hi, there are no specific tasks on Wikipedia:WikiProject Porto just yet, but I'm guessing you do a fair bit of translation from P'guese location articles, so you could find plenty, especially about parishes and areas in Porto itself. You could also sign up to the project, that doesn't tie you in to any level of commitment, also it will help show other ed's that it's a serious project. Nice one, Deizio 11:18, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
